Edith Wharton's final work, "The Buccaneers," was published posthumously in 1938. Set during the 1870s, this novel offers a glimpse into Wharton's younger years. Upon her death in 1937, the story was incomplete and saw publication in its unfinished state that year. The manuscript concludes with the character Lizzy extending an invitation to Nan, and Guy Thwaite, for a house party. It was published by Penguin Books in New York in 1938. Later, in 1993, Marion Mainwaring completed the novel according to Wharton's meticulous outline.
