One fascinating fact about the Roman Empire is that it was the first state in history to use a postal system. The Corpus Caeliorum, or 'Sacred Way', was a network of roads and waystations throughout the empire. The postal system, known as the "cursus publicus," utilized fast horses and chariots to deliver messages, mail, and even officials. Messages could travel up to 1,000 miles (1,600 km) within a week, making it one of the most efficient means of communication in the ancient world. It continued to function even after the fall of the western Roman Empire.
